Sketching with ShouXin: A Practice Guide and Workbook

This is the very first sketching workbook by artist ShouXin, designed not only as a workbook, but as a companion for daily practice, artistic exploration, and inspiration.

In this guide, ShouXin shares his personal drawing philosophy and expressive techniques, guiding you from simple exercises to more complex forms through an enjoyable yet challenging creative journey.

What’s Inside

The workbook contains 96 model sketches by ShouXin, carefully selected to help you progress step by step. The content is divided into three progressive sections:

  • Beginner – build your foundations
  • Advanced – develop skills and confidence
  • God-tier – challenge yourself with complex forms

This structure makes the workbook suitable for artists and learners at every level.

Product Details

  • Format: Landscape A4 (same size used in ShouXin’s daily sketching)
  • Cover: Handmade cowhide fiber paper
  • Paper: Archival-grade extra-thick Daolin sketch paper (writable)
  • Writable Sketch Paper (Daolin)

The inner pages are printed on thick Daolin sketch paper that closely resembles the paper ShouXin uses in his own daily practice.

Each page features one small model sketch in the upper-left corner, while the remaining space is intentionally left blank for repeated practice. Rather than simply copying the reference, the workbook encourages you to observe carefully, experiment with your own line work, and gradually develop confidence in your drawing.

How to Get the Most from This Workbook

There is no single "correct" way to use this workbook. Here are a few approaches recommended by ShouXin:

  • Experiment with line quality. Try drawing the same sketch using lighter or heavier pressure, and compare how different line weights change the overall feeling.
  • Repeat the same sketch several times. Drawing the same reference three to five times helps your lines become more natural, confident, and fluid.
  • Study before you draw. Observe the model sketch carefully and identify the details that matter most to you, such as the eyes, nose, or mouth. Then use simple, flowing lines to complete the rest.

The goal is not to reproduce every line perfectly, but to develop your own line work and confidence through careful observation and repeated practice, rather than simply following a fixed template.
